…So how’d a guy with such an honorable and
impressive lineage end up as just another anonymous schmuck with dreams of
being a Hollywood screenwriter? Hell if I know.
Well, maybe I do. See, I was a pretty
voracious reader when I was a kid. Hemingway, Twain, Chandler , Hammet, Matheson, Crichton and, of course,
King: I loved them all. But it wasn’t until the winter of my sixteenth year
that things really kicked into high gear for me. I had broken my leg in a
skiing accident and was forced to spend quite a bit of time lazing about at
home. One day Dad brought me an anthology of Edgar Allen Poe’s short stories.
“The Murders at the Rue Morgue,” “The Black Cat,” “The Premature Burial,” “Loss
of Breath,” “The Oblong Box,” and—good God!—“The Tell-Tale Heart.” I was
utterly and absolutely blown away by those stories, devouring every delicious
word.
And I love movies. Pretty much anything by
Wes Craven, John Carpenter, Brian De Palma, the Bond flicks, Dario Argento, and
the whole Roger Corman-Vincent Price oeuvre.
But while I was
always a big fan of horror and thriller movies, my love of film really took
flight in 1991, when my dad took me to a tenth anniversary screening of Raiders of the Lost
Ark.
He put me in the
car and said, “You’re gonna love Indian
Jones.”
I had absolutely no idea who this Jones
fella was, but I sure did find out! A couple hours later I was sitting in that
darkened theater completely mesmerized by it all. From the opening shots in the
Peruvian jungle, to the stealing of the golden idol and escape from the
booby-trapped temple, the raid on Marion’s tavern, the Well of Souls and all
those slithering snakes, the down-and-dirty fist fight at the airstrip,
pursuing the Nazi truck convoy, the U-boat on the Aegean Sea, the final
confrontation with Belloq and the gratifyingly gruesome destruction of those
evil Nazis. And finally—that last shot—as the Ark of the Covenant is consigned
to the oblivion of a government warehouse. Holy fuck, what a great goddamn
movie!
